ARTIST: LEONARD EVANS III
Artist Leonard Evans III, native and resident of
Baltimore views his work as a service to God; to encourage and inspire hope in
the Lord Jesus Christ. Evans' art is undoubtedly a reflection of his
beliefs and lifestyle.
His work has been exhibited at the Life of Maryland
Gallery, The Eubie Blake Cultural Center, The National Black Arts
Festival in Atlanta, and numerous galleries and art festivals. Evans
has received local and national recognition for his work in painting, drawing
and sculpture mediums. Umoja Children Greeting Cards, March Funeral
Home as well as a host of individuals, have commissioned him to create
works of art. He has also received favorable reviews in various newspapers
and magazines in the eastern region.
The Baltimore Times Magazine awarded him the
Positive Persons Award; primarily because he is a young black man who continues
to make a difference in promoting positive aspects, all the while,
keeping a focus on the fact that the black man is an "endangered
species". Evans has a equally strong commitment to
family. He states, " Family must stick together. We as fathers
need to give our best to and for our children's sake because if we don't
demonstrate the love of God in our lives, who will?"
Leonard hopes to leave a legacy behind to his
children so they won't have to want for anything. Evans says his creations
are not limited to the pleasure of himself, but for his family and anyone
else who will benefit from them.

ARTIST: Eljay McBride

Photograph by Denee Barr |
When
asked how long has he been creating art, Eljay will answer for as long
as he can remember, probably from the age of four. Eljay McBride, whose
pen name is Elijah, was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. Although
he attended the respected Maryland Institute College of Art, he
considers himself a self-taught artist. He is noted as
"God-gifted" by many and is considered a talented "shining light"
amongst contemporary artists. |
| Eljay has
been able to develop a unique style through his years of practice and
experience. He is a painter of inspirational and jazz themes with
a realistic quality. He works mainly with oil and acrylic, yet is
just as effective with pen and pencil. His use of shadow and light
is clearly evident in his style. |
| One of
Eljay's strongest and most popular pieces is "Annie," an acrylic
painting of a little African-American girl that seems to consume each
viewer through her need for love and compassion. Also, through his
artistic evolution came "Born Again," a powerful oil painting of a most
unique version of a mother and child. |
| Eljay's art
is shown throughout the world. His piece "Sang Along" appears in
the movie Runaway Bride as part of Richard Gere's character's art
collection. Eljay's work can also be found in many distinguished
collections, including those of Sugar Ray Leonard, Bill Cosby, Oprah
Winfrey and Anita Baker. |

ARTIST: JAMES MURPHY
|
Who Is James E. Murphy, Jr. ?
James, a native of Baltimore, developed a
special interest in art while in his fourth year of grade school. It was
then that he decided to be an artist. James was blessed with having the
opportunity to nurture his talent through participation in various
community art programs and workshops during his preteen years which
prepared him for an academic art education at the Baltimore School For
The Arts High School. After which he went on to receive a Bachelor of
Fine Arts Degree in visual communication from the Maryland Institute
College of art.
After college, James began a career in
freelance commercial art. He has completed illustrations for various
publications including Physical Therapy Today Magazine and Umoja
Children Inc. Greeting Cards. His work has also been showcased in
various art exhibitions throughout Maryland.
Today in addition to freelance illustration, a
major portion of James's time is devoted to the fine art market through
which he makes available to clientele his original artwork and
reproductions of his original artwork. James also offers such commercial
services as website development and logo design.
James believes that his art is a gift from God
and thus a vehicle through which he can creatively express his three
convictions: cultural awareness, family values and his faith in God . It
is these convictions that have led James to establish his own art
company, Something For Your
Soul (SFYS). Through SFYS it is James's goal to provide art that
is more than merely cute wall decoration. He wishes to set a standard of
art that penetrates the surface of one's admiration and ministers to the
soul.
